Electric Foil

By | December 10, 2017

In October 1955 Electric foil was in its infancy with fencers and referees both struggling to adapt to it. One solution posed was to have the scoring equipment on a cart and assign an “apparatus manager” to move the cart during the bout so it was always in line with the director.

Also of interest are the rule changes. In 2013 there was a motion in front of the FIE to change decrease the bout time to 2 Minutes. Here we see the US changing their format to 5 touches in 10 minutes to conform to the FIE. Where has the time gone! Also touches were now scored “against” instead for “for.” This would be reverted again to the current method after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
